In Case You Missed It
Last week's presentation was on Charity: Water with founder Scott Harrison. Scott started Charity Water at the age of 28 after a mission trip to South Africa. While abroad Scott realized that one of the biggest problems many people face, half of the world's population actually, is not having access to clean drinking water. Scott shared with us heart gripping videos about how people in Liberia get water. With one billion people in the world not having access to clean water Scott decided to create an organization unlike any other. Scott focused on why people in their late 20's to mid 30's typically were not donating to charity as much as they were able to. He found the reason that most younger professionals were not donating was because they didn't see their money in action and do not want to pay overhead or administrative fees. At Charity: Water 100% of every donation goes into building a well or water purification facility, overhead is paid for by other means. They also have utilized technology and have each well marked on Google Maps for their donors to see steady progress. So far Charity Water has raised 11 million dollars and has provided clean water to over 820,000 people. Locally, Jody Landers has been raising money to support this effort and recently traveled overseas to see the work that is being done. Rich Dwyer presented Captain Quentin Boyle with a check for $1,000 to kickoff the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign. Quentin's goal is to raise $150,000 this year. This year's Chairperson is Jeff Armstrong.
