In Case You Missed It

Last week's presentation was on the "The Story in My Backyard: Open Your Door, Open Your Eyes, Open a Book".  Paul Mayes, Jill Goldsberry, Dave Bakke, and Betty Collins shared information about the annual Community Read for the Environment project that "promotes reading, writing, and concern about the environment".  This program runs from February to May and encompasses activities at the Musser Public Library, Environmental Discovery Center, Muscatine Community College, and Pearl City Station.  On Friday, April 17th from 4-7 p.m. join Laura Liegois and others down on the riverfront to celebrate Earth Day, fun activities will be available for the whole family.  Be sure to check out Storytime at the Musser Public Library for exciting topics related to the environment.

February 9th Club Announcements

·          Mike Ruby, has various recruitment materials for members.  Mike challenged us to use the materials to help aid in the recruitment for new members.  Please see Mike for more details.

·          Marilyn Smith reminded us to save the date on May 7th for the "Party on the Pearl" event.  Gavin Jerome, "The Morale Mechanic" will be providing entertainment.  More details will be available soon.

·          Norm Smith updated us on the Youth Exchange Program.  Three Muscatine students will be going to study abroad next year, for a total of 13 from District 6000.  There is no update on the three Kosovo students who left Muscatine.

·          Come celebrate Rotary on Monday the 23rd at the Pearl Bar from 4-7 p.m.

We are the co-chairs of the United Way's  "Let's Talk" Culture of Poverty Affinity group and are sending you this invitation because we want to share an experience with you. This experience will simulate daily life of a person living in poverty.

 

On February 26, 2009 during the evening from 5:00 PM - 8:30 PM, members of the Culture of Poverty Affinity group and staff from the Iowa State Extension Office in Muscatine will provide a participatory simulation of life in poverty. This simulation will place you and other Muscatine community members in real life situations which you, as a "member of a family" will be challenged to navigate.

During the simulation you will be asked to "make do" with the public assistance that would typically be provided to a family on welfare.

 

Because we are committed to changing the lives of our community members who live in poverty, we feel that the community as a whole must first understand the realities of poverty. You will find this to be a life-enhancing exercise that will impact you personally as you better understand others in our community. We encourage you and challenge you to join us on the evening of February 26th.

 

Location: Muscatine High School - Stan Howe Commons

Soup and Sandwiches will be served

Simulation will begin at 5:30 PM
