February 7th Meeting Notes:
President Mary Wildermuth opened the meeting telling members it is "World Understanding Month" and "Rotary Anniversary Month."
Rich Dwyer gave the invocation and Tim Nelson led the songs.
Rotary moment/quote for the day. There were 8,500 youth exchanges last year. Also Did you know that one can get a masters degree through Rotary?
Norm Smith introduced Erica Henderson and Eli Price. They attended the meeting as outbound exchange students. Erica will leave in August for a "short stay" hoping to go to Chili or Spain and Eli will be leaving for the "long year" program to Spain or Italy.
Senior guests from MHS included Rachel Sturn, Austin Seifers, Emilie Sloat, Sarah Soria, Austin Taylor, Megan Sieverding, and Cynthia Smith. Student sponsor, Kerri Hawkins reported that MHS has been awarded a grant for $11,200 which will be used for "Know How To Go Iowa" which will help fund college scholarships to MHS seniors.
Emilie Sloat, Interact President, invited all to the February 20th Talent Show to be held at the high school at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $5.00 at the door. Half the proceeds will go to Xicotepec and the other half will purchase backpacks and school supplies for elementary students.
Makeup meetings will again be held at Snackers on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:00.
Happy News -
Keith Porter gave accolades to all the MHS Show choirs and bands who received great reviews.
Mike Ruby talked about recycling and that curbside cardboard pickup had 98 ½ more tons than the 6 months from July 1 through December 31 of last year . The City sells it, we are much more environmentally responsive, and we are saving on expensive landfill space. The next step is to start a plastics and newspaper pickup.
John Stevens was happy the swimmers did so well and gave $3 for 3 relays, $3 for three 1st places, and $3 for three second places. Yea John. Love those multiple dollars.
Ron Yohe was happy that he is now healthy and told the BEST story. Be sure to ask him what happened at Wendy's if you were not here.
Program
Rick Bodnar,
Director Research and Development, SSAB told about the new R & D facility
at SSAB. They will be able to run all
kinds of tests at their new facility. We
learned that there are 2,000 different kinds of steel. This is a positive story where state
incentives and tax incentives brought new jobs to Iowa and Muscatine
County. You could tell Rick is very
proud to tell about the simulations they will be able to do in the new labs in
the new $11 million dollar facility.
They are still seeking several kinds of engineers too.
