Today's Program: Muscatine Bridge Tribute Plaza Presentation by Gage Huston
In Case You Missed It
Monday's presentation was given by teachers from Muscatine Schools: Kelli Sanders, Jillian Poppel, and JoEllen Kill on Pennies for Peace. Pennies for Peace was inspired from the novel Three Cups of Tea, by Greg Mortensen. The book shares the experience of Mortensen in Pakistan and his effort to build schools for children in the area. Having been so moved by the book these teachers decided to make an impact by engaging their students. This program creates educational opportunities at every turn. Students in the local elementary schools began bringing in loose change to fill a large tea cup. The students were so excited about the opportunity to potentially "build" a school for children in Pakistan that the project has been very successful. To date the children have raised over $1,170! Rotary has been challenged to replicate the student's efforts by donating loose change at each meeting. Here is how your donation can make a difference in Pakistan and other countries: $20-buys one student's school supplies for one year, $50-buys one treadle sewing machine and supplies, $600-one teacher's annual salary, and $5,000-support for existing school for 1 year.
