Rotary Program: Ron Reed CEO of Mercy Hospital provided an informative program on all that we didn't know about the Affordable Care Act.  Ron through a $1 in the scholarship pot for the great introduction by Kelly Garvin.  Ron started with a great quote from Thomas Jefferson who said "Without health there is no happiness."  The Affordable Care Act is a very significant piece of public policy legislation.  AFC impacts Public Health, Medical Delivery Systems, Pre-HospitalCare, Physicians Clinics, Hospitals and Nursing Homes/Assisted Living/Skilled Care Facilities.

Ron provided an update on the major trends in health care provision:  population is aging but living longer, costs are rising, health care stats are improving in some areas and declining in others, we have a renewed interest in living healthy as evidenced by the "Blue Zone" initiative.

The Affordable Care Act: expands medicare, is based on Health Benefit exchanges, and mandates insurance coverage. ACA cuts payments to providers and raises taxes; reforms the delivery system, expands medicare coverage, replaces Iowa Care and creates Accountable Care Organizations. (ACO's)
