What is Cyber-Crime & Ransomware, and Why Should We Care?
Barth Donald is a lifelong resident of Muscatine. Husband to wife Rachel, and proud father of four children: Anthony, Bentley, Isabelle, and Audrey. Barth has 15 years of IT experience in the banking industry and ten years of IT consulting experience and currently transitioning to owning and operating an IT consulting firm. Since 2020, Barth has held the certification of a Certified Banking Cybersecurity Manager (CBCM) from the SBS Institute.

Cyber-Crime: Criminal activities carried out using computers or the Internet.  Examples: Identity Fraud, Phishing Emails, Account Hacking, and RANSOMWARE
Ransomware: Cybercriminals breach a computer network and install malicious software on systems. Encrypt and block access to files and systems. Demand a ‘ransom’ payment to restore access to files and systems. Publish and destroy confidential data if payment isn’t made. Businesses affected by ransomware suffer from loss of income, loss of public trust, and potentially going out of business.
Attacks are made by hackers, organized crime, or insiders looking for financial gain, disrupting infrastructure, or revenge.
What can be done?  Educate employees, evaluate business continuity plans, Engage 3rd parties to test and evaluate, increase cybersecurity budget, talk to your insurance provider and strengthen backup and restore processes.
