Happy News/Announcements:  Charla Shafer: Our Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine Annual Meeting is scheduled for October 8th and we are excited to announced that Dr. Jim Yong Kim, who grew up in Muscatine, and was named the President of the World Bank, will be joining us as our featured speaker.  The link to register for the free event follows: https://jimkim.rsvpify.com/  Hope you can join us and please feel free to share.
A bit more info: Dr. Kim has devoted his life to changing global development, health, and education policies to shift people’s sense of what is possible. Kim was dubbed “the Healer” by Brown University.
He was the 1978 Muscatine High School valedictorian, class president, and participated actively in extracurricular activities including Model UN, basketball, golf, and football. (Jim added that he was quarterback of the football team during the longest losing streak in Muscatine history.)
Dr. Kim’s awards and honors include receiving a MacArthur Fellowship “genius” award, being named as one of America’s “25 Best Leaders” by U.S. News & World Report, receiving the Carnegie “Greatest Immigrants Award”, being named as one of the “50 Most Power People in the World” by Forbes magazine, and being recognized as one of TIME Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World".
Marvin Krieger: It is easy to criticize but hard to Thank.  Take a moment tonight to thank your spouse for their support, and see the reaction you get.  We need to do more of that. Diana Gradert: had cataract surgery and it turned out well. Also has a new Great Grandchild. Naomi DeWinter: Jeff Armstrong did a lot of work in Afghanistan and now with turmoil, people have reached out to MCC for help, and MCC has been able to help some families.

Speaker Introduction: Tibe Vander Linden- Muscatine County Auditor
Tibe is a lifelong Muscatine resident.  Previously Law Librarian for Stanley, Lande & Hunter, and Account Manager & Insurance Agent for over 25 years with Beckey Insurance and Financial Services inc.

Program: New Election Laws
The Auditor office is responsible for Voter registration and conduct of Elections.  Tibe has been busy learning laws and attending trainings since she started her position.  The next election will be City and School board elections on Nov. 2nd.  All Election information can be found at https://www.muscatinecountyiowa.gov/150/Voter-Registration . Change in poll hours this year, Polls will be open 7am-8pm, closing 1 hour earlier. Other changes in election laws include changes to absentee ballots that tighten up some of the time for absentee ballots. Early voting is Oct. 13th-Nov. 1st at the Auditors Office 8am-4:30pm Mon-Fri.  In person voting is Nov. 2nd.  There will be no Ballot Drop Boxes for absentee ballots due to some of the high costs to meet the regulations of having a Ballot Drop Box including 24 hour surveillance cameras and the box being emptied and logged 4 times a day each day including weekends and holidays. Absentee ballots can be mailed in or turned into the auditors office.  Another change to note is voter’s have been marked inactive if they missed the previous general election.  Previously this was 2 general elections, but the updates were made by the state in line with the new laws.  However it is very easy to reactivate voting status: request an absentee ballot, or register to vote again.  If anyone would like to volunteer to be a poll worker contact the auditor’s office.

Upcoming Meetings: Nov. 6th - Labor Day NO MEETING, Nov 13th- Michelle Berns, Muscatine County Conservation- Pollinators presentation, Nov. 20th- Holly Barrett, Trinity Public Health- Pandemic Update.
