We had our meeting on Zoom.

Recap from the August 17, 2020 Club Meeting:

Invocation:  Paul Fitzpatrick

Guest:  Gretchen Nollman - Rotary Club of West Liberty.

Happy News/Announcements: Keith Porter shared with us the devastation he saw in Marion, IA - piles of debris, utility poles down, no power and the people working together to clean up.  Greg Bock said to let him/Salvation Army know if you are in need of any assistance.  Diana Broderson let us know the dedication event for the new water tower painting today at 4:00.  Jessica Wittman let us know that volunteers are needed in Cedar Rapids to construct make-shift shelters, there are many people living in tents.

Club Business:  Rotary face masks are available for pick up at the following locations:  CBI with Rick Gosney, at MCC with Naomi DeWinter, Frank Iliff at Rebuild Together Muscatine County, or Greg Bock at Salvation Army.  The Rotary bike rack was installed at Contrary Brewing.  The Rotary way finding signs are up on the trail system.  We received our $2189 check from Rotary Foundation to match our grant -  we will be purchasing heart monitors for the Muscatine High School PE department.  The Board will be meeting via Zoom today at 1:00.  Welcome Mike Wedell and Greg Bock to the Rotary board, our board is now full.  If you are interested in becoming the clubs Secretary or Treasurer, please let a board member know.

Program:  Our program was Shane Orr with United Ways of Iowa - ALICE report.  There are 25 United Ways in Iowa - Shane is the current Chair of the Board of Directors.   ALICE stands for - Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, Employed.  The numbers in the ALICE report are pre-Covid 19, the real numbers are worse.  Muscatine County has 37% of households under the ALICE threshold for income.  In Muscatine, a single adult needs to earn $20,868 to meet the most basic needs, a family of 4 need $59,028.  Almost 50% of households do not have enough to set aside to cover 3 months of expenses.  For more information and statistics visit  https://www.unitedwayalice.org/iowa.   Thank you Shane.

Reminders:  August 24 - will be a fellowship meeting.  August 31 our program will be Christy Roby Williams with Public Health.  September 7 - there will NOT be a meeting due to Labor Day.  September 21 - our District Governor, Steve Dakin, will be our program.  Keep a look out for e-mails from our president, Rick Gosney.
