Happy News:  Diana Gradert reminded us that August 5th in the Arts Council fundraiser.  Erika Cox is happy that the L&M softball team won State!  She also let us know that the Muskie Pom girls are selling the "M" to put in your driveways or place of business.  Let her know if you need one or have an old "M" that needs a touch up.  Marv Krieger's 4th great grand child was born on Friday.  #5 is on the way.  Alan Ostergren is happy that his daughter is back from Europe and his credit card survived!  Shane Orr is happy that his son, Ody, is back from RYLA.  He also let us know that Erika Cox is forming a committee to plan the clubs 100 year celebrating, so she may be contacting members to help out. 
 
Program:  Nancy Carlisle is the diabetes educator and wellness manager at Unity Point Health.  Nancy has a masters in nutrition education.  She was raised in Atalissa, IA and has lived in this part of the state her whole life.  Insulin was discovered in 1923 in Canada.  Nancy's father was 18 months old when it was discovered that he had type 1 diabetes.  He was one of the first children in Iowa diagnosed with diabetes.  At age 25, Nancy found out she had type 1 diabetes and she has many family member with it as well.  Nancy wants to help people not have diabetes through educating and wellness.  There are social determinants of health that affect wellness:  housing, family, transportation, nutrition, income, etc.  She is the grant coordinator for the Trinity Muscatine SIM C3 Grant. (SIM - State Innovation Model).  Through this there are diabetes education system and community care coordination - that focuses on addressing social determinants of health.  The focus if this years projects are:  creating sustainability, diabetes education scholarships, and track data of health care usage.  Nancy helps to lead diabetes education and wellness with experienced educators, a team of registered dieticians, and glucose monitoring systems that are improving through technology.  There are 32,000 people in the state of Iowa with diabetes.  In Muscatine county 1 in 9 people are pre-diabetic and don't know it.  Thank you - Nancy.
