Program:  David Maxey and Dr. Santiago Ortega presented information on the University of Iowa Stroke Program.  The big message is that Stroke can be cured today if the patient gets to the ER immediately and receives the TPA medication within 3 hours of the stroke.  The clot can actually be captured and removed with current technology. Dr. Ortega said that the U has been working on the delivery system and improving the rate of response by the medical team.  15 million persons have a stroke each year. Having a stroke is the main reason persons are in nursing homes.

Dr.Ortega stressed getting to the hospital quickly and getting the necessary medication. The University program is the first dedicated stroke unit in the country.
