Program:  Darin Person gave an informative program on the VA Suicide Prevention Program which serves 55 counties. A crisis line was mandated by Congress in 2007. The name has been changed to Veterans Crisis Line with text messaging service available too.  The goal is to get persons to the service prior to a real crisis!!  Homeless outreach is a part of their mission, as is mental health care.  82-83% of the referrals just need someone to talk to. 7-8% are for medical concerns, perhaps for medication doseage adjustment. 8-9% are for immediate crisis requiring an Emergency Rescue Team.  In Darin's experience the younger vets are the individuals with more combat exposure.  He indicated that most vets adjust very well when they return home.
